Halloween in Australia: Why We Celebrate It & How It’s Changed

Halloween might’ve started out as a big American thing, but these days it’s crept right into Aussie life, including right here in Canberra. From front yards decked out with fake cobwebs to kids running around in polyester costumes, October 31st is no longer just another date on the calendar; it’s become a proper event we all look forward to.

But how did we get here? And why does Halloween matter to us down under?

Growing Up Aussie: The Early Days of Halloween

If you were a kid in the ‘90s or early 2000s, you’ll know Halloween wasn’t always the full-blown celebration it is now. Back then, only one or two houses on the street were bothered to put up decorations. Trick-or-treating usually meant you and your mates walking around with pillowcases, knocking on doors, and crossing your fingers that someone had a stash of treats ready.

And let’s be honest, half the time you get a weird look and a “we don’t do Halloween here.” The other half? Maybe a handful of chewy lollies, a fun-size choccie bar, or, if you were really lucky, one of those giant lollipops from the milk bar.

Costumes weren’t fancy either. Most of us went as a ghost in a bed sheet, a witch with $2 shop face paint, or a vampire with mum’s red lipstick smeared across our faces. It was dodgy, it was makeshift, and it was brilliant.

Why Halloween Took Off Here

So why has Halloween gone from being a “sort of thing” to a proper Aussie tradition?

Movies & TV. We all grew up watching American kids living their best trick-or-treat lives, and eventually, we wanted in.

Community spirit. Aussies love an excuse to knock on a neighbour’s door, have a yarn, and share a laugh. Halloween gave us just that.

The fun factor. Kids get to dress up, score free lollies and choccies, and adults get to throw a party. Hard to argue with that.

These days, heaps of houses are covered in cobwebs and inflatable skeletons. Kids spend weeks planning their costumes, and the supermarkets dedicate entire aisles to Halloween snacks and decorations. It’s gone from a handful of houses to whole neighbourhoods joining in.

The Aussie Twist

Of course, we do things our own way:

It’s lollies and choccies, not “candy.” Trick-or-treat bags are stuffed with the classics we all grew up on.

It’s spring, not autumn. Forget pumpkins in the frost, it’s spring, mozzies buzzing and, in plenty of places, choccie bars already starting to melt.

No fuss. We’re not about over-the-top perfection. A pumpkin on the verandah and a few trick-or-treaters are enough to call it a win.

Halloween in Canberra and the ACT

Here in Canberra, Halloween has grown from a handful of kids in dodgy costumes to a full community event. If you’ve driven through the suburbs in late October, you’ll know some streets go all out with cobwebbed fences, spooky front yards, and bowls of lollies and choccies at the ready.

Family suburbs like Gungahlin, Belconnen, and Tuggeranong often see kids roaming the streets in groups, while Braddon and Civic lean into Halloween with themed bar nights, parties, and events. Shopping centres across the ACT also run trick-or-treat trails for little ones, making it easy for families to join the fun.

What makes Halloween in Canberra special is the sense of community. Neighbours decorate, families walk the streets together, and local businesses jump on board with themed menus, treats, and displays. It’s become one of those rare nights where much of the city feels connected.

Why It Matters

Halloween’s become more than just spooky costumes and sugar highs. It’s about fun, connection, and creating memories. It’s about the nostalgia of remembering how exciting it felt when a stranger handed you a lolly or choccie at their front door, and seeing that same look on your kids’ faces now.

It’s a night that brings neighbours together, gets families out of the house, and gives kids a story they’ll talk about for weeks after. And really, isn’t that what celebrations are all about?

Whether you’re in Belconnen, Braddon, or out in Tuggeranong, Halloween in Canberra and across the ACT has earned its place on the calendar. From trick-or-treating to house parties, or just handing out a cheeky bowl of lollies and choccies, it’s a night that’s here to stay, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
